Hampshire, Jewel in the Crown of England's Literary Heritage
Albion Books is based in Portchester with its famous Roman fort and mediaeval castle, close to the historic Naval City of Portsmouth, whence Admiral Lord Nelson sailed to meet death and glory at Trafalgar. Here also is the birthplace of the immortal Charles Dickens, now a museum. In a surgery destroyed in the blitz Dr Arthur Conan Doyle penned the first adventures of Sherlock Holmes, while in the very same street draper's assistant H.G. Wells experienced the drudgery which would one day inspire 'Kipps'. Sadly, Rudyard Kipling spent some of the unhappiest years of his childhood in Southsea. Other literary sons of Portsmouth include George Meredith and Sir Walter Besant, while adventure writers Percy Westerman and James Clavell both attended Portsmouth's famous Grammar School. Nearby Fareham was the childhood haunt of Thackeray, while rural Chawton, further to the north, was the birthplace of Jane Austen. Ruined Titchfield Abbey was once the home of Shakespeare's patron Lord Southampton and the Bard himself may once have performed within its venerable walls.
